RECENT AWARDS

 

Spring 2011 Department Awards

Undergraduate Students

  • Alena Pirok won the Norman Caldwell-James R. Sanders Award. This award goes to the graduating history major with the highest grade-point average in history courses. It is named for Dr. Norman Caldwell, a former professor in the History Department and Mr. James R. Sanders, the 1964 recipient of the award who contributed to its funding.
  • Philip Hosfeldt and Danielle Weider won the Leason Awards. These scholarships are available to junior and senior history majors who are preparing to teach history in secondary schools. These awards are made possible through the generosity of Marge E. and Arthur J. Leason in memory of their son, John, who was preparing for a teaching career at the time of his death.
  • MiJoi Euells and Savannah Sanders won the Pitkin Memorial Scholarships. These scholarships go to junior, senior, or graduate students who have declared an intention or are majoring in history. James A. and Patricia J. Pitkin established these scholarships in memory of Mr. Pitkin's father who was a Professor of American History at SIU for many years.
  • Alena Pirok and Krysta Wise won the Alumni Awards. These awards are made possible by funds contributed to the SIUC History Department during the annual fundraising telethon. Theyare given to current undergraduate or graduate students in History who show evidence of special promise as historians.
  • Krysta Wise won the Edward O'Day Undergraduate Paper Award. This award is given to the author of the outstanding paper by an undergraduate during the previous calendar year. It was established by funds donated by Emeritus SIUC History Professor Edward O'Day. The recipient's paper is published in the department's undergraduate journal of history, Legacy.

Graduate Students

  • Nate Davis won the Stanley Zucker Prize for Outstanding Graduate Student Paper. This award is given to the author of the outstanding paper by a graduate student during the previous calendar year. It was established by funds donated in the name of Dr. Stanley Zucker, a long-time professor in the History Department.
  • Maria Stuart won the Department's Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. This award goes to the outstanding history graduate student who assists a professor in a core curriculum course. It is made possible by funds contributed to the SIUC History Department during the annual fundraising telethon. The winner of the award goes on to compete for the university-wide Outstanding Teaching Assistant in the Core Curriculum.

Faculty

  • Dr. Ras Michael Brown won the Department's George S. and Gladys W. Queen Award for Excellence in Teaching. It is an annual award given to the outstanding teacher in the History Department.
